'Dealing with the cancer crisis' Dr Marc Gunter Reader in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at Imperial College London, Marc’s research into the effect of diet, physical activity and body weight on body metabolism and colorectal cancer development is funded by World Cancer Research Fund. Certain people have this nihilistic view that ‘we’re going to get cancer anyway’ but that’s not true for the overwhelming majority of cases. There are certain things we can do in our everyday lives to mitigate our risk of developing cancer. And looking at cancer prevention, rather than solely cancer treatment, is definitely a more effective way of dealing with the cancer crisis. That’s why World Cancer Research Fund plays such a vital role – it is the only cancer charity that really focuses on prevention and particularly how we can modify cancer risk through lifestyle changes. It’s really quite unique.
